Flattery just doesn’t seem to work. Sarcasm occasionally goes too far. Hyperbole is met with disapproval. Wise cracks are received with a grimace. Humble offerings are taken as overselling.

Genuine feelings are taken as fraud. Wild nights are suppressed by expectations. Laziness prompts excuses. Lies swirl in the air. Thanks go unnoticed. Oversharing leads to trouble.

Because you did notice how hard I worked. Because you did respect my effort. Because you know I can be pushed, and because you know I don’t want to be pushed too far. Because humor is an escape, and alone time is a right. Because it is not who I am, and definitely not who I want to be.
